Myopic
Books Wakefield is proud to present an exhibit of
photographs by South County native and resident
Mathias Oppersdorff. Mr. Oppersdorff has been a
professional photographer since 1965. His three
books of photography, all published by Syracuse
University Press, include, Adirondack Faces, People
of the Road: The Irish Travelers (a chronicle of
Mr. Oppersdorff’s 26 year involvement with
the "gypsy" group in Ireland known as
the Travelers), and Under the Spell of Arabia (images
from the photographer’s 14 months of travel
in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East in the early
1970's).
Mr.
Oppersdorff’s exhibited photos includes South
County’s stonewalls and their builders, originally
funded through a Rhode Island 2000 Grant. Their
focus is the beauty and tradition of South County’s
stonewalls whose builders, many of whom were Native
American, worked and continue to work as sculptors
assessing the attributes of each stone to create
these uniquely beautiful structures. Mr. Oppersdorff’s
photographs capture the walls’ timeless nature,
their connection to the landscape and through the
use of natural light, their sculptural qualities.
Myopic
Books will have signed copies of Mr. Oppersdorff’s
books for the duration of the exhibition.
Mathias
Oppersdorff was born in Boston, but has been a life-long
South County resident. He holds a Masters Degree
in Political Science from the American University
in Washington, D.C. and Bachelor of Arts in History
from the Fairfield University, Ct. He worked as
a travel photographer for Gourmet magazine for 18
years. Oppersdorff’s current work includes
a series of studio nudes in black and white shot
with a pinhole camera.
